The Process of making Traditional Micaceous Clay Pottery

I first journey out to dig this precious clay in the mountains of Northern New Mexico, as the original potters (Pueblo/Jicarilla) who inhabit this region have been doing for time untold. It is then processed at my home studio to filter out earthen matter such as rocks and twigs. Each vessel is then shaped by hand, built one coil at a time. Once dried it goes through a rigorous finishing process which includes multiple rounds of scrapping, sanding and burnishing. It is eventually fired with wood harvested from the land here, usually on a moonlit night, and once pulled from the fire will be kissed by your horses hair which burns into the red hot mug leaving a unique impression.

About this Vessel

Here in Northern New Mexico, micaceous clay pottery has been a very traditional form of cookware, long before the advent of cast iron and steel pots. The naturally occurring mica particles in the clay gives these vessels a magically glittery surface and also help the pottery to withstand thermal changes, making it an ideal form of cookware.

These mugs tend to run a bit larger, perfect to warm your hands around. They hold quite a bit of beverage (14-16 ounces on average)  and are completely fire safe, meaning they can be placed on the wood stove to keep warm, or even be used to cook inside of on a propane stove or wood fire. Each vessel is hand built and has its own unique shape and color.

Shipping Instructions

Once you place your order, you will be shown a confirmation screen with horse hair mailing instructions. I will simply need a small amount of horse hair, preferably TAIL HAIR, mailed in an envelope to my address in New Mexico. It is preferable to use the horse hair from a grooming session, pulled out of the grooming brush in a big clump. The more hair you send, the bigger impression we will get.

Please note that each mug will have a unique shape, but will generally look as pictured.

Once I receive your horse hair, please allow 1-3 months for delivery.
