CUSTOM HORSE HAIR MUG

After speaking with a beautiful woman who had just lost her 32 year old equine companion, I realized how special it would be to offer custom horse hair mugs, made with -your- horses hair.

I have been making mugs with my own horses hair for a few years now, and it feels SO special to drink out of these vessels. They tend to run a bit larger, perfect to wrap you hands around and warm them up on. They hold quite a bit of cozy beverage (14-16 ounces on average)  and are completely fire safe, meaning they can be placed on the wood stove to keep warm, or even be used to cook inside of on a propane stove or wood fire. Each vessel is hand built and is its own unique shape and color. The horse hair is burned into the mug as soon as it is pulled out of the fire...red hot....each horse hair design is unpredictable and unique. I think of my sweet mare each time I drink from mine and it's the best feeling!

Once  you place your order, you will shown a confirmation screen with horse hair mailing instructions. I will simply need a small amount of horse TAIL hair, mailed in a simple letter envelope to my address in New Mexico. It's perfectly fine and even preferable to use the horse hair from a grooming session. You do not need to cut the tail hair, and I dont need much to work with. Even a strand or 2 will leave some kind of impression on your mug, though I prefer more hair to work with. See photos in description to get an idea.

I journey out to dig this Micaceous clay in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. It is processed at my home studio, to filter out earthen matter such as rocks and twigs. Each vessel is then hand built using a coil method that is very traditional to the Pueblo and Apache people who inhabit this region and have been working with this clay for time untold. Once each vessel dries it goes through a rigorous finishing process which includes multiple rounds of scrapping, sanding and burnishing. It is eventually fired with wood from the land here, usually on a moonlit night, and once pulled from the fire will be kissed by your horses hair which burns into the red hot mug leaving a unique impression. Quite a labor of love.
